Adopting digitization & digitilization is the only way to go for manufacturers to stay competitive

The inaugural session was on Enhancing Digital Readiness of Manufacturing Sector – Opportunities and Challenges. The new world order is that industries must align themselves to the objective of delivering superior and / or differentiated customer experience with customized product offerings & superior services. So to put it simply, industries must work towards excellence in manufacturing which is Customer centric. In this journey, digitization & digitilization under the whole Industry 4.0 initiative plays a very crucial role for industry.

But is this happening ? The answer seems to be that awareness & adoption is slowly picking up as industries are beginning to realize that there is no alternative to adopting digitization & Going digital to achieve these goals. But this pace of adoption needs to accelerate for industries to achieve more production, costs reduction,greater operations efficiency,consistent quality,waste reduction and more thus enabling companies to survive and also be competitive. So Mr.B.Santhanam, Chairman,CII SR –MADE & President & Managing Director,Saint Gobain India Pvt Ltd in his talk urged manufacturing leaders to start implementation at least in small ways or face the scenario of falling behind.

Mr.Santosh Sreedhar,Executive Director, Avalon Consulting, in his presentation showed the results of a survey among mid-sized firms which indicated a low Digital readiness among them saying that about 83% were in ‘Naive & Digital Novices’ category and only 18% were in ‘Adopters & Innovators’ category. He said the 4 key elements in Digital readiness are Awareness,Strategy ,Capability & Culture. He also said that Digitization works best when both functions and management identify and push for digital initiatives. This also elevates the role for IT department as enabler.

Mr.Ravi Raghavan,Co-Chairman,CII-SR MADE Initiative & Managing Director, Bharat Fritz Werner Ltd in the following panel discussion spoke about them having embedded softwares for predictive maintenance butsaid that further adoption of digitization technologies among industry is slow due to budget constraints.

Mr.Josh Foulger,Managing Director, Foxconn India Pvt Ltd mentioned that nowadays people are using various digital technologies for their personal purposes but when it comes to professional purposes, the usage is low. Mr. K.Sriram, COO, Delivery & Operations,North America Strategic Verticals, Tech Mahindra said that Digital Transformation is a key pillar to drive transformation,the industry drivers being Intelligent/Smart products, Industry 4.0/Smart Manufacturing,Customer Centricity and Big data & Analytics.

Speakers in Session 1 on Core Manufacturing for the Digital Age spoke that in addition to focus on operational excellence & efficiency which has been on for few decades, companies need to work differently and create value for end customer through data driven eco-systems while still being cost effective. Mr.Nagaraju Srirama, President & Managing Director, JK Fenner India Ltd while stressing the need for increased digitization mentioned that due to too many tech jargons, the lack of clarity can be removed by educating and creating better awareness paving the way for increased digitization by industry. Mr.Lokesh Payik, Chief of Business – Digital Enterprise,Robert Bosch Engineering and Business Solutions Pvt ltd , spoke about the transition from the Digital Dilemma among industry to emergence of a Smart Society 5.0 through an unprecedented rate of change.He mentioned that India is poised to win on the new Industrial revolution due to decades of IT expertise,technology leadership and Talent @Scale and factories must transform to Future Factory now.

Mr.Michele Bonfiglioli,CEO, Bonfiglioli Consulting spoke about their Lean factory School, an innovative training school which enables participants to appreciate the Lean World Class® approach putting it into practice in a mocked-up working environment. It is also a great place where to experience Lean & Digital Transformation first-hand.He said there are no short cuts to the road to perfection in Digital transformation and its a never ending journey. He said , defined as a new industrial revolution, Industry 4.0 is ongoing and developing.

Mr.Rahul Garg, CEO, Moglix Ltd, showed a vendor platform casestudy helping Uno Minda achieve 100% integrated digital supply chain achieving improved operational efficiency,inventory reduction,100% compliance, reduction in conflict & mismatch.

Session II was on Digitising Logistics and Supply Chain. Mr.Ramnath S Mani, CEO, Automation Excellence, spoke on how digitization with Industry 4.0,makes the Supply Chain more Efficient,Agile and Customer-Focused. He said that logistics & supply chain sector is undergoing a disruptive transformation enabled by Digital Technologies as different parts of the supply chain right from the raw material procurement, inventory & issues, manufacturing, quality, dispatch & fleet management & tracking which used to be separate units with little visibility between each other has now complete visibility across the supply chain.Industry 4.0 enables connected factories creating cross disciplinary collaboration bringing Shop Floor to Top management and Extensive sharing of Enterprise data beyond the Enterprise gives deep insight into business. Mr Deven Pabaru, Chief Strategy & Implementation Officer, Stellar Value Chain Solutions Pvt Ltd similarly spoke about End to End Supply Chain capability & visibility covering visibility ,system integration and alerts from import, domestic supply till distribution covering online market place & distributors. This helps in monitoring deliveries, have product lifecycle transparency, and ensure quality services.

Mr.Mohd. Samdani,Asst Director,National Productivity Council,Govt of India spoke on Smart Manufacturing for SMEs and the myths like high investments,non-integrability with legacy equipments,extensive personnel training,ROI not justifiable,& significant corporate sources required.

Session III was a panel discussion with focus on different parts of the customer journey and how digital technologies played a major role in improving customer experience over past years.Mr.Amit Gossain, Managing Director, Kone Elevators India Ltd, Its estimated that we will have around US$ 50 billion connected devices by 2020 across the world, Companies would spend US$ 500 Billion on digitalization every year by 2020, & Total value created by Smart manufacturing would be US$ 3.7 Trillion by 2025. Mr.Lajpat Yadav, GM-Sales & Marketing, Lincoln Electric Ltd said that digitalization is an imminent certainty covering digitization , collecting ,transmitting and storing data(IoT) & converting the data into actionable information as OEMs are demanding it from vendors,users are realizing benefits,workers are familiar with tablets than paper,& machine suppliers are offering it.

Mr.Uma Shankar, Certified Energy Auditor (BEE),ITC Infotech India Ltd also spoke about the benefits that companies get on the energy front through technologies like consumption monitoring, energy savings and many more.

The conference concluded with Session IV which was a panel discussion on managing digital transformation and the related challenges and learnings. Panel speakers Mr.Anantha Sayana,Chief Digital officer,L&T Ltd, Mr.Manish Saraswat,Sr Director, S/4 Hana Product Management,SAP Labs India ltd,Mr.Pulkit Gaur,Founder Gridbots Technologies Pvt Ltd, Mr.Mark Francis, Technical Director, Automation Excellence spoke that the digitization initiative is a entire organization’s team effort with proper awareness,understanding and adaptation to the disruptive changes. The solution provider and end user need to have the proper understanding about the problems & the related solution requirements.
